FAQ

Do you do custom papercuts for weddings, birthdays and other special occasions?

When I first started papercutting, custom work was a large part of my growing business. I credit so much to the early clients in my papercutting journey that hired me to do custom papercuts for special events in their lives! I loved doing those and am so honored to have made many papercuts for many families and people.

Over the last couple of years, My focus has shifted to projects that require more time and attention. Because of the time commitment necessary for creating a handmade piece of art, commission pricing starts at $1,000.00. I welcome inquiries about custom pieces and will be happy to share more information about pricing and process.

Please note- I do not take on pet portraits or cutting out photo portraits-I am happy to suggest papercut artists who are.

Do you teach classes? Is Papercutting hard?

Papercutting is a wonderful art form and the materials and techniques are suited for beginners. With over 10 years of workshop teaching experience, I lead workshops for small groups, large groups, young and old, artists and non-artists. I love teaching and have been doing some online classes. I hope to be able to return to teaching in person when it is safe. In the meantime take a look at my Classes page for the latest news.

How did you get into Papercutting?

It is a long story! I graduated from The Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Fibers. During art school, I did not study papercutting or illustration, but spent my time making puppets, costumes, community-based parades, and events (another long story). When I graduated, I began working with a shadow puppet theater. I spent many hours cutting out silhouettes using an Exacto knife and paper for our shadow puppet shows. These easily accessible and affordable materials inspired me to make papercuts as gifts for people and from there, I knew I had found what I was meant to do. Through a lot of encouragement and support from friends, family, and clients, I have grown this into a full-time career as a multimedia paper cut artist.

Do you donate to fundraisers and organizations ?

I love to support when I can! I prioritize donating to BIPOC lead organizations and organizations that work in the community and have diverse boards, staffing and leadership. If you would like to seek a donation please email me with the details for your request and I will gladly consider it and get back to you.

So how many blades DO you go through per papercut ?

I use Excel brand blades, and I order my blades in packs of 100. I usually go through a few blades per piece, depending on how intricate the design is. The secret to a detailed papercut is to change the blades often!

Is that a special Font? It looks like a papercut!

It is! Thanks for noticing. My talented friends Val Lucas and Chad Clikeman made it for me. You can see more of Chad’s work Here! and Val’s Here!
